German Zverev lost the Shanghai Masters third round clash 3-6 7-6 6-4 and lost his temper when he was broken in the third set when going down a break.
The 20-year-old battered his racket against the floor and needed a new one after shattering it.
He bounced it off the floor at the baseline before finishing the job by hitting the bottom of the umpire’s chair with it.
Zverev had beaten Aljaz Bedene in the second round after getting a bye in the first.
The world No4 has had a good season this year with five titles in 2017 and has already qualified for the ATP Tour finals in London next month.
But he could be in trouble with the tennis authorities after shattering his racket in Shanghai.
The German has history for breaking his rackets and did it in Monte Carlo when facing Rafael Nadal and did it in Shanghai last year when he thumped it against the floor several times.
Del Potro now faces John Isner or Viktor Troiki in the quarter finals as he looks to extend his good year.
Del Porto got to the US Open semi final last month where he lost to world No1 Rafael Nadal after winning the first set.
And the Argentine has backed Zverev to have a big future in the game despite the outburst.
“He’s still so young,” he said
“He still needs to learn. He’s already a great player and has everything to be at the top in future.”
