It’s been a big week for Samsung at CES, but predominantly for everything but their smartphone division.
Despite this, there was still a slim but very important piece of news regarding their Galaxy S smartphone range and when they plan to unveil the new phone.
According to DJ Koh, president of the technology company’s mobile division, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will launch at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tradeshow running from February 26th to March 1st 2018.
This new flagship handset for the company is widely believed to be an iterative update to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ rather than a wholesale redesign.
That’s certainly not a bad thing though, because both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ received numerous awards in the past year, despite the rocky start caused by the battery problems that struck the Galaxy Note 7.
As mentioned, there’s been plenty of leaks which have – bit by bit – given mobile fans some small slices of info about how the phone is coming together.
Each rumour on its own won’t help all that much, but piece them all together and you’ll start to get a very clear indication of where Samsung is headed with their new flagship smartphone.
So to help, we’ve rounded up everything we think we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy S9.
Samsung Galaxy S9 – Release Date
As mentioned, Samsung will unveil the new phones on stage at Mobile World Congress.
Previous rumours from the likes of Venturebeat had pointed to CES as a potential launch date for the hotly-anticipated flagship phone, but clearly, those rumours were wide of the mark.
More importantly, we can now start to pinpoint when the phone will launch in shops.
The most likely release date would be in March. However, you might be able to pick some accessories much sooner.
A leak from prominent case manufacturer Olixar, has several third-party accessories listed with a pre-order page for its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ products and supposedly they will be available to buy on February 28th.
Samsung Galaxy S9 – CES LEAKS
Over the course of CES 2018 a leaked image on Reddit appeared which alleged to show the retail box for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and a whole load of specs.
In truth, a lot of these specs and features have already leaked heavily over the past few months (most details you’ll find further down the page).
However, seeing them on what looks like a fairly legitimate retail box finally adds a bit of believability to the rumours. Although as with all things until they’re confirmed, a pinch of salt should always be taken.
Here are the main takeaways from the leaked retail box:
• The S9 will have a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ SAMOLED display
• There will be a 12-megapixel Super Speed Dual Pixel rear camera
• The box also mentions a super slow-motion video capture
• Stereo speakers tuned by AKG, as well as AKG headphones in box
• iris scanner, 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage
• IP68 water and dust resistance and wireless charging support
Samsung Galaxy S9 – Design
As you can see from the above gallery, there’s been plenty of renders concepts and more leaked for Samsung’s new headset.
This includes some of the most recent reveals from OnLeaks and MySmartPrice, who earlier this month leaked several new renders for the phone.
“These renders (above) show that while the phone will look near identical to its predecessor from the front, it’ll sport an upgrade dual-lens camera round the back, alongside a repositioned fingerprint scanner.” writes theinquirer.net.
Samsung Galaxy S9 – Price
Of everything that has been leaked so far, nothing leaked has given any clear indication on how much the new Galaxy S9 or S9 Plus will actually cost.
However, if the new smartphone is anything like the S8, most people would expect the handsets to cost around £689 and £779 SIM-free.
Samsung Galaxy S9 – Battery
There’s been numerous reports online which all suggest that the S9 will have a much larger battery capacity, especially compared to its predecessor – the Samsung Galaxy S8.
According to a source in China, Samsung is looking to increase the battery capacity from 3,000mAh in the Galaxy S8 up to 3,200mAh in the Galaxy S9.
This would match up with past rumours from SamMobile, which previously suggested the Galaxy S9 will be thicker than its predecessor.
For those wondering, thicker normally suggests a bigger housing, which in turn can mean a bigger battery.
Furthermore, whilst the leaked battery cell information made no mention of the Galaxy S9+, we can assume that it too will have an increased battery capacity.
Samsung Galaxy S9 – New Features
Further to reports that the phone will still feature a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone and will not live up to the benchmarks of the iPhone X, more rumours about the handset suggested it will feature an improved facial recognition system and a dual-camera setup that was debuted on the Galaxy Note 8.
Though neither of these features have been confirmed, Samsung has revealed some of the key components likely to feature in its next-generation flagship device, hinting at the capabilities of its upcoming hardware.
This comes in the form of a new mobile processor, which is specifically designed to power top-of-the-line devices such as the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9 when…
