Liverpool fear that Joel Matip could be sidelined for a month with a thigh injury.
The former Schalke defender was hurt during Wednesday night’s 3-0 win at Stoke City and is a major doubt for the club’s hectic festive programme.
Matip is certain to miss Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brighton and the crunch Champions League showdown with Spartak Moscow at Anfield next Wednesday.
The Reds are waiting to discover the full extent of the damage but there’s a growing concern that he will not play again until January.
That would mean that Matip misses eight matches in December – giving Jurgen Klopp a major defensive headache.
It leaves Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan as the manager’s only fit senior centre-backs.
Joe Gomez is also another alternative, having impressed at right-back so far this term.
Klavan is expected to return to action alongside Lovren at Brighton after illness ruled him out of the match against Stoke.
