A preseason hit to Kansas City Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman will still result in Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict being sidelined for the regular season, though not for as long as once expected.
Burfict’s suspension for the hit was reduced to three games from five on Wednesday following an appeal, according to Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Burfict appealed the suspension, and both the team and coach Marvin Lewis spoke out in support of the linebacker.
“I was kind of surprised,” Burfict said of the initial discipline handed down Sunday. “Obviously with the play being within the rules I’m kind of surprised, but you’ve got to play with the cards you’re dealt. I let my teammates down, I let my coaches down.”
