National Milk Day 2020: Date, History, Significance, of The Day First Milk Deliveries Began in the United States

Every year January 11 is celebrated as National Milk Day in the United States. The day celebrates milk and the importance of it. However, it is said that on this day first milk deliveries began in the US in glass bottles. Milk is an essential part of our lives. A glass of fresh milk is considered a complete food. Not only is it rich in various nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin B12, and vitamin A but serves as a healthy filler in between meals.

The US began to observe Milk day after Alexander Campbell of New York Dairy Company claimed to the New York State Senate that his company was the first to make these deliveries in 1878. The United States and Australia serve as big exporters of milk and milk products. Right from cheese, yoghurt, ice cream, butter, cream to even powdered milk.

National Milk Day History

The history of National Milk Day dates back to  1915. It is said that the day celebrates the first time milk deliveries in glass bottles were made. The International Association of Milk Inspectors had submitted a request to Congress in October of 1915 that contained the resolution naming an observance of National Milk Day.

National Milk Day Significance

The day is celebrated to observe the importance of Milk. The nutrient-packed food is an excellent source of protein and has plenty of vitamins. Drinking milk and dairy products has been known to provide you with calcium and prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures. Milk is also known to help you maintain a healthy weight.

There is more than one milk day celebration. In India, November 26, is celebrated as National Milk Day. Dr Verghese Kurien, who is also known as the Father of the White Revolution in India was born on this day so every year, the day is celebrated as National Milk Day across India. World Milk Day, on the other day, is celebrated on June 1. The day was established by the Food and Agricultural Organisation.
